Abu Dhabi Takes Flight: Residents Will Soon Soar in Taxi Drones!

Abu Dhabi residents may soon find themselves soaring through the skies in taxi drones. The Middle East's first trials for passenger-carrying drones were successfully held in the city, marking a significant milestone in the region's pursuit of smart mobility solutions.

The trials, which took place during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Mobility Week from April 24 to May 1, 2024, showcased two innovative drone models. The first was a five-seater drone capable of travelling over 25 kilometers, with a payload capacity of up to 350 kilograms. The second model, a smaller drone, demonstrated the ability to carry two passengers for distances of up to 35 kilometers in approximately 20 minutes.

The event was a collaboration between Abu Dhabi Mobility and the Multi Level Group (MLG), a leading technology company dedicated to advancing sustainable transportation. These trials are a testament to Abu Dhabi's commitment to becoming a global hub for smart and autonomous vehicles, leveraging its advanced infrastructure and nurturing strategic partnerships with industry-leading companies and innovators.

Mohamed Al Dhaheri, a board member of MLG, expressed his excitement and pride in being part of this historic moment. "The seamless integration of technology and aviation represents a significant leap forward for our nation," he said. Al Dhaheri himself took part in the test flight of the passenger-carrying drone, showcasing the potential of this new mode of transportation.

The successful trials have set the stage for further developments in the field, with companies like Archer and Joby Aviation planning to launch eVTOL air taxi services in Abu Dhabi as early as 2026. These developments are in line with the city's vision to consolidate its leading position as a friendly and enabling city for the smart mobility sector.

As Abu Dhabi continues to shape the future of smart and sustainable mobility, residents eagerly await the day they can soar above the city's iconic landmarks in a taxi drone, embracing a new era of urban transportation.
