Netflix's latest sci-fi offering, "Atlas," is a mind-numbing mess that will make you wish you could forget you ever watched it. "Atlas," directed by a filmmaker whose name not worth mentioning, tries to transport audiences on an epic voyage through space and time but instead drags us through a plot so dull and uninspired that watching paint dry seems exhilarating.
The movie stars Jennifer Lopez who at times seem as lost as I was. The supporting cast fares no better, with performances ranging from wooden to outright laughable.
The plot, if you can call it that, focuses around a futuristic quest to save Earth from a self-aware AI villain named Harlan Shepherd, who is hellbent on eliminating humanity in order to preserve humanity. Unfortunately, the plot is littered with clichés and obvious twists that are reminiscent to AI movies with the same concept.. cough, cough I, Robot.. cough!
Visually, "Atlas" is a mixed bag. The spectacular effects, while occasionally amazing, are excessively used to the point of tiredness. The film extensively relies on CGI, which frequently resembles a terrible video game rather than a high-budget picture.
To sum it up, "Atlas" is a colossal waste of time and potential. It’s a perfect example of how not to make a sci-fi film. Save yourself the headache and skip this one. Netflix has plenty of other options that won’t make you regret your evening.
